Many products do not have terminal blocks, but instead require the user to create a connector, and wire it in. With GSI-2, adding connections is simple, and requires only a screwdriver!

PLEASE NOTE: The GSI-2 Controller has been discontinued. If your project calls for a similar controller, please contact Gunn Systems for more information.

Hardware

The GSI-2 is a flexible controller for use in control systems, automation, or product prototypes.

The GSI-2 is designed with a variety of I/O (Input/Output) requirements built in. It was developed with the idea of creating a flexible home automation node that can provide for a variety of needs. This controller was also developed to provide an expandable platform for quickly prototyping products that require a small amount of intelligence and I/O. Personality Modules (EEPROMS) can be pre-programmed and installed in field and contain the event programming (logic) and logging data.

Standard Hardware Features:

  • 10 MHz 68HC08 Microcontroller with 32K Flash ROM, 512 bytes RAM, 8 chan ADC
  • X10 Home Automation interface
  • Serial (RS-232) Interface
  • Real Time Clock with lengthy power outage backup
  • LCD Display (20x2 characters) with backlight or Fluorescent Display
  • Simple Encoder/1 button user interface (Selector Knob); Keypad option also available
  • Dallas 1 Wire interface to Temperature sensors (2 external connectors; unit ships with one temperature sensor included)
  • Audio tone Output (variable tones and levels/durations)
  • 2 High Current Switched Outputs (10 Amps AC/DC)
  • 4 Analog Inputs (0-5V) or configured for digital Inputs (8 bit res)
  • 4 Digital Outputs (up to 500ma sink outputs with pull-ups)
  • Photo-sensor (light) detector for ambient lighting conditions
  • Infrared commands (from standard, TV-type remote control)
  • EEPROM (1K Words), socketed for easy removal, for event programming and log data (Personality Module)
  • Contains built-in circuitry to re-program the flash memory from a serial port (no extra hardware required to re-program the microcontroller)
  • SPI Connector for expansion I/O boards
  • Easy Terminal Block connections for I/O

Both the RS-232 Interface and LCD/Keypad provide full control of the controller. The RS-232 interface has a menu that can be accessed from a PC or any "dumb terminal" or serial communications program.

The GSI-2 is the only product on the market that provides programmable control at the X10 node. It has rich feature set that allows for control flexibility. The X10 Interface provides these possibilities:

    1. Time Sync (Set clock to 3:00 AM)
    2. Programmed Event (i.e.: tones, outputs, displays)
    3. Override Health LED Display
    4. Tone Alert

The GSI-2 has many potential applications for unique automation devices that do not currently exist. The flexibility of the GSI-2 platform will allow this generic and flexible product to transform to meet a specific need the customer has through simple programming. Many particular niches may be addressed by Personality Modules, so the end customer does not have to do any programming.

A major advantage to using the GSI-2 is that the hardware design files are freely available under General Public License. What does this mean to you? It means that you (or your end customer) will have everything needed to produce GSI-2 units independently, if desired (units are also available from the Gunn Systems Store). It also means that a qualified engineer will have all design files needed to customize the GSI-2 hardware, if necessary. See the Development section for more information on GSI-2 customization.

The embedded software is written in the C language, and, like the hardware design files, is made freely available through General Public License. Please refer to the Simple-Rulez section for more details on the Simple-Rulez embedded software.

Optional Expansion Modules

The GSI-2 includes a hardware expansion slot, capable of handling these expansion modules:

5-Relay Expansion Board
  • Features:
    • 5 relays rated at 1/2 Amp 110VAC each
    • One relay board may be mounted directly on GSI-2; multiple boards may be connected to GSI-2 using a cable
    • Indicator lights to indicate relays active
    • Integrated with Simple Rulez Software
8-Bit I/O Board (8 IN, 8 OUT)
  • Features:
    • 8 Inputs and 8 Outputs.
    • Inputs have on-board pull-up and can take ground closure (ie: switches) inputs
    • Outputs are 1/2 amp DC sink outputs.
    • Outputs have built in diode protection.
    • One I/O may be mounted directly on GSI-2; multiple boards may be connected to GSI-2 using a cable.
    • Indicator lights to indicate outputs active
    • Integrated with Simple Rulez Software

These GSI-2 expansion modules are available in the GSI-2 Store, and like all GSI-2 hardware, design files are freely available in the Download section.
